Bulgaria
Bulgaria sits at the gateway between east and west, sharing a border with Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey. Russia is not far away, across the Black Sea.
Bulgaria’s history
Bulgaria spent forty- five years behind the Iron Curtain. The Soviet- backed Communist Party resigned without bloodshed soon after the Berlin Wall came down in 1989 and the Balkan nation then had a difficult transition to a capitalist economy. It was finally accepted as a member of the European Union in 2007, the year Andrei Monov died and Jock Palfreeman was arrested.
