Backlash againt Hristo Monov

On the sixth day of protests in the Bulgarian capital Sofia against corruption on both sides of politics, Hristo Monov publicly referred to the protestors as ‘internet lumpen’ or ‘internet idiots’. He said parents who let their children protest were bad parents.

Reaction on social media was swift. Monov was described as arrogant and referred to as “Gogov”, his code name as a secret agent during the communist regime when he worked as a collaborator for the Sofia police.

Monov won a seat in Parliament during the May election when he ran for Burgas with the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP). The BSP won fewer votes than the centre right party GERB but has managed to form the government by working with two smaller parties.  The BSP was in power when Jock Palfreeman was arrested.
