Nationwide protests sweep Bulgaria in February 2013

On 20 February 2013 the centre right government of Bulgaria (GERB) resigned after nationwide protests over the high price of electricity, low standard of living and rampant corruption. A caretaker government is now in place.

Bulgarians will go to the polls on 12 May 2013.

Hristo Monov Running for Power

The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) has announced that Hristo Monov will contest the seat of Burgas, widely considered to be a safe seat for that party. The BSP was in power when Jock Palfreeman was charged with the murder of Monov’s son Andrei, and lost power amidst claims that it had failed to stem corruption.

Monov’s Past Revealed

The Commission investigating the former Communist State Security has now revealed that Hristo Monov was a  State Security collaborator. Recruited in 1988, Monov served until 1990. He was a secret “agent” with the nickname “Gogov”. This has important political and social significance.   Below is the official information from the Commission’s internet site.
